To Do: Make it or Break it!

I had the pleasure of meeting with Dr. Beverly Kaye, international speaker and author of Love ‘Em or Lose ‘Em and Love It Don’t Leave It this Tuesday. (You can read a review of Love ‘Em or Lose ‘Em here.) Dr. Kaye is about to release a new HR training tool called CareerPower 3.0 which will be an amazing tool for employers and employees alike. Dr. Kaye has created the tools to help employees to put their careers into their own hands. To many this sounds intimidating or even impossible, but it’s not. Dr. Kaye has once again created a tool that seems deceptively simple, but has the backbone to make a difference.

Dr. Kaye has long been a proponent of the self-powered career – and rightly so. Personal branding has become a part of our work-vocabulary, and in this recent economy many of us have had to take a more active and creative role in our own career development in order to survive. Dr. Kaye says that we are on our way to a “new normal”. She is absolutely right. In her article: Career Development: Do You Know Where You’re Going? co-authored by Rosalind Sago, she  gives a few pieces of advice to people who are navigating the current career environment:

1. Know yourself.
2. Know how others see you.
3. Know what’s changing. (In your industry, in your work.)
4. Know your options.
5. Know what you need to learn. (Prepare for future possibilities.)

Times are tough, but even tougher if you refuse to take responsibility for your career and personal development. The age has come in which we will be in a state of constant learning and constant development in order to stay relevant. Don’t get left behind.
